But there is something that you can do that you might be overlooking. In a recent article in the New York Times, it reported on a study of school kids ages 9 and 10 and how the kids fitness level related to their ability to perform well in school and on tests. Now, anyone of my generation can remember the Shool House Rock shows on TV that told us that exercise was good for us. But that message was long before video games, TV's with 100's of channels and computer games. I think its a message that needs to be promoted now more than ever.
This a more important now, more than ever, when you consider that childhood obesity rates are showing a clear movement in the wrong direction. If the reports are any indication, kids today are becomming more unfit and more obese at rates never seen before.
These findings arrive at an important time. For budgetary and administrative reasons, school boards are curtailing physical education, while on their own, children grow increasingly sluggish. Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that roughly a quarter of children participate in zero physical activity outside of school.
Would this also indicate, considering the recent study cited in the New York Times article, that these kids are also finding themself at a disadvantage in their education?
